Before you place an order for the final design of your cabinets, make sure that Noll Remodeling Cincinnati reviews design considerations for kitchen remodeling with regard to the mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and structural components of your home.

Plumbing Restrictions in Cincinnati kitchen remodeling:
Many homeowners may want to tear out the soffits in their existing kitchen, to make the kitchen more open, and for the opportunity to select 42" high wall cabinets instead of the standard 36" cabinets. Often times water lines or drain lines are placed in the soffit and have to be dealt with. Water lines can be moved around fairly easily, since they have a small diameter and are under pressure. Drain lines for a bathroom upstairs require a more creative approach. Some good kitchen remodeling ideas can alleviate this problem, so the intended design can be achieved. We may be able to move the drain lines and/or build a false back to an upper cabinet. This can cut down on the storage capacity of one or more cabinets. The cabinet designer in your kitchen remodeling project needs to know this before ordering the cabinets. Sometimes we hide the plumbing stack in a wall or bring it down in a room and treat it as a decorative column, perhaps wrapping it in wood with a paneled look or creating a fluted column.

Structural Changes in kitchen remodeling:
Can you take down this wall? Yes we can. Noll Remodeling has never met a wall that it couldn't take down. If it is a bearing wall (a wall that supports weight from the upper floor) we can remove it, but we will need to put a header across the distance of the wall. The

header extends down from the ceiling several inches, and looks like a soffit, wrapped in drywall. The header can be 2x12s, a laminated beam, or a steel beam, which rests on posts at each end. One of the best kitchen remodeling ideas is to install a steel beam, which can reduce the size of the header, giving you more height. If plumbing or an HVAC duct exists in the wall, we would most likely, run them along the ceiling and bring them down a wall, in a bumped out area. This may make the soffit wider, and require a vertical bump-out or soffit. If the wall is nonbearing and was framed mainly for a division of space, the ceiling height can be maintained, unless plumbing or HVAC ducts require us to build a soffit.

Electric Capacity in kitchen remodeling:
Light fixtures or switches can be installed fairly easily in most kitchen remodeling projects. If you would like to add several recessed can lights in the kitchen and the home has a floor above it, the drywall or plaster would need to be cut. These areas can be

patched if there are a few changes, or the entire ceiling can be covered with ¼"drywall and finished. Some electrical changes or additions can be made without any problem. Other times drywall repair is necessary.

If the existing electric panel is full, a new one would have to be added. If you are adding major appliances or a whirlpool tub for instance, you may have to increase the service to your home. If the existing service to your home is only 100 amps for example and you will be starting projects such as kitchen remodeling, we may have to run a new electric line from your house to the telephone pole or to the transformer.

HVAC in kitchen remodeling:
As your kitchen plan changes, we may have to re-locate supply registers. These registers can usually be placed in the kick plate of base cabinets. If you were putting a downdraft stovetop in your island, Noll Remodeling would most likely run the vent between the floor joists to the outside. If the floor joists are running the wrong way, we can build a soffit below the floor joists and run to the outside. If the basement is finished, we may decide to cut the subfloor from the 1st floor. In any case, the basement ceiling drywall can be cut and repaired to run HVAC or plumbing lines.

Preparation for kitchen remodeling:

  • Set up a makeshift kitchen in a convenient room. We can help you do this. The refrigerator and microwave can be moved to this area. You can use some of your old cabinets to store essentials such as dishes and things that you use everyday. Put the old countertop on the cabinets you've moved, if it fits. Otherwise we can cut a piece of plywood for you.

  • Locate the temporary kitchen near a sink, preferably a larger sink such as a laundry sink, to wash dishes.
  • When you pack up your kitchen cabinets and pantry, designate several boxes as long-term, boxes that you won't open until after the kitchen remodeling. Make sure that you mark your boxes with great detail, because there is a good chance you will be looking for several things. Place all the things you use every day in the temporary cabinets, located in a convenient spot.
  • Buy a crock-pot before you start the kitchen remodeling. Collect pizza coupons. Plan to eat out a lot. This will be a good time to take advantage of that big coupon book you buy from fundraisers but never use.
  • Remove items that may get damaged or that will be difficult to dust, such as electrical components, paintings, items in closets, computers, etc.
  • Good Luck!
